Shh - don't anyone tell my daughter that you can actually buy animals at the pet store. For right now, it's a free zoo with visit a lot and we're all happy that way. Since our newlywed days, we've been practicing saying "No" to pets. He'd bat his eyelashes at me and pretend he was one of our (yet unborn) children begging for a puppy, to which I had to respond "No" and he'd get more and more dramatic until I caved and he told me I didn't stand a chance. His siblings (I won't name names here) are famous for bringing home random animals and suckering their parents into keeping them and they, of course, lived for decades. So I've been cultivating my argument for years now. But the day she figures out that pets are an option is the day I prove my coldheartedness.
